You’ve Been Lied To, Deceived and Misled

I started working with women just like you back in the early 90’s…. and the things I’ve seen in this industry are nothing short of despicable. These are the things that forced me to strike out on my own and make it my sole mission to help women, EXACTLY like you, get the body improving results they desire and deserve.

Let me explain…

In 1992, right after I graduated from SUNY Buffalo with a degree in Exercise Physiology, I started working in the Employee Health and Fitness program at Pepsi-Cola Headquarters in Somers, New York.

It was a great program - filled with many fantastic people, a great experience to say the least. But there was something that didn’t sit right with me - something I didn’t realize until I moved on and was able to reflect on my experience there.

In short - there was a ’system’ in place - a basic way to get users of the program from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’ to point ‘C’ and so on… - it was a universal approach that basically applied to everyone, male or female - young or old…

Everyone had these ‘exercise cards’ where they would record what they did on a given day - so it was ‘documented’… The exercises on these cards were first ‘prescribed’ by one of the fitness professionals on staff - and then “changed” every few months or so…

It’s important to note here that EVERY corporate fitness program was being run in the same exact fashion - by implementing this very conservative, cookie cutter approach to ‘helping’ all of the employees…

How do I know this?

Before I took the part-time position with Pepsi - they had hired me as an intern - and part of fulfilling my internship requirement was the completion of a thesis. My thesis was a benchmark survey of 18 other, very prominent corporate fitness/wellness programs.

The benchmark survey included companies such as Texaco, Travelers Insurance, GE - just to name a few…

Now - don’t get me wrong - these programs were all pretty effective at improving the general health and wellness profiles of the employees and hence - the company as a whole…

But - there was still a lot missing from the ‘physical results’ department - especially when it came to the women in these programs. See, most of the men were married with kids, etc - and they really didn’t care for the ‘looks’ as much as they did their health…

But the women were a different story, and RIGHTFULLY SO - they wanted to be sexy again, they wanted to shed the uncomfortable flabby inches and get rid of the grotesque pounds that took away their womanly sex appeal and attractiveness…

Looking back - they were really just a victim of the system they were in - and not their own “bad genetics” (which is a shameful hoax) or the lame excuse of “just getting older”…

Health Clubs Put Business First, Womens’ Results Last

Fast forward about a year, and while I’m building up my in-home fitness training business (Personal Trainer Inc.) - I’m also doing part-time work in several health clubs to make ends meet…

By this time - I realize I really enjoy working with women - because of their deep genuine desire to really turn back the clock and reclaim their body and lives… and I develop a ’special knack’ for helping them achieve their dream bodies by fixing their worst problem areas and most stubborn trouble spots.

While this is all going on - I am also attending night school for a Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology - and I’m learning stuff about the female body that most other trainers will never hear about in their lifetime…

As I’m learning this information - I’m also ‘experimenting’ on myself and my female clients - and getting astonishing results - results almost too good to be true…

Now here comes a sick problem…

In the health clubs - I start getting all the business. All the women clients want to be trained by me - and not the other trainers. The other trainers start catching attitudes with me and the drama starts…

I could see this coming from a mile away… It’s a mid-summer afternoon and I had just finished 4 back to back training sessions, Jeff the ‘Club Manager’, asks me to meet him in his office…

So I do…

Jeff says “Joey, I notice how busy you’re getting and all your clients are getting great results too. But it’s creating a big problem for me. We have to change a few things…”

I ask “What’s the problem and what has to change, Jeff?”

Jeff replies “It’s a few problems Joey… First one is all the full-time trainers are downright pissed that you’re getting all the new female clients and they want me to do something about - but even bigger than that is how you’re training these ladies - You’re basically going against the club’s ‘unwritten policies’, Joey”

As you might imagine - I’m dumbstruck as Jeff is saying this - So I ask…

“What policy are you talking about?”

Frustratingly, Jeff replies “We’re a fitness center, Joey - with expensive machines and all kinds of weight training equipment - and thats what our members are supposed to be using - SO THEY STAY MEMBERS FOR A LONG TIME, JOEY - see, Joey - they can’t do all this stuff at home - this is how we stay in business…

“And this takes me to the liability issue, Joey. See, all the trainers are certified by at least one of the major organizations. And every new trainer is taught to train people on weights and machines - according to the ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) standards.”

I ask “What does that have to do with how I train women?”

Jeff says, “Ok - when we follow industry standards and a member gets hurt and they try to sue us - we basically get off scot-free - without having to pay one thin dime - because we followed standards. The shit you’re doing with these broads has the potential to cost us big bucks, Joey - not because it’s unsafe - but because it’s not the normal stuff - it doesn’t follow club standards.”

At this point I’m fuming inside - but I hold my cool…

I say “So what you’re telling me is ‘Members results don’t come first… following bullshit, ineffective standards does come first’ - and if they just happen to get the results they really should be getting - then great.”

In a steamed tone Jeff replies “Yes - thats pretty much it - this is a business and that’s how we have to run it. So what are you going to do, Joey?”

I tell Jeff “You and the owners can shove your rip-off standards up your ass. I’m finished here, Jeff - I have a training business to build based on delivering jaw-dropping results - nothing more.”

So I leave there - and inevitably 3 of the women I was training leave that club and hire me to train them in their home. Pretty cool - but the ‘crap’ worse before it gets better…

Personal Training Studio Scams Women Into Long-Term Contracts

Now I’m pretty much focused on my own business and things are cruising along - I’m helping women go from fat and flabby to firm and sexy - and the word starts to spread - I’m the hottest thing in town…

Surprisingly, I get a call from a local personal training facility in Greenwich, Connecticut - the training director, Stu, wants to know if I’m interested in ‘helping out’.

I don’t really need to join them - but I figured why not explore the possibility and see what they’re thinking…

I go meet with Stu - and the first thing I ask is “What made you think of me to help you guys out?”

Stu says “Well, word around town is you’re pretty hot stuff and are building up quite a following of serious female clients.”

I say “Yeah - I’ve been pretty fortunate so far - I’m working pretty hard at it too.”

Stu explains “Joey, thats how this place actually started. 3 trainers all running around to people homes - it was crazy - and so we decided to band together and open a facility where everyone can come to us. In essence, Joey, we want you to join us and become part of the team. What do you say.”

I say “Stu - I appreciate the offer - but I don’t even know your business model, your overall training philosophy or the long term business goals - it may not all fit with me. I have my own ideas, ya know?”

Stu quickly replies “Thats cool Joey - no problem… Here take this with you - and check it out tonight when you have a few minutes. It’s our complete Operations Manual - it explains how our training system is designed for maximum profitability and all the other things you might want to see.”

Right there and then - the alarm in my head goes off. The first thing out of Stu’s mouth is about making money - nothing about getting clients the results they want…

I tell Stu “Ok - I’ll take a look and get back to you tomorrow.”

Stu replies “Cool, Joey - I’ll wait to hear from you.”

As I walk to my Jeep I can already feel there’s gonna be a bunch of crap that doesn’t sit too well with me in this manual - I just didn’t know how bad it would turn out to be…

So that night I finally sit down and start going through their Operations Manual…

I start thumbing through it and I’m stunned at what I’m reading - I mean I was literally floored…

Their whole model was built on the foundation of keeping clients for as long as humanly possible. They did this by getting them results BUT - as slowly as they could without making the client suspicious!

I mean they had a whole freakin’ script series they would use with every client tying them to long term contracts that were deviously in sync with their fitness assessment and progress update evaluations.

Get this - in the New Trainer Protocol section - there were 7 pages dedicated to teaching new trainer how to make a client believe that they could never do any of this on their own - in other words the new trainer was taught how to get all clients to totally become dependent on having a trainer whenever they wanted to exercise - almost like a sick co-dependency…

Here’s how that section looked…

SECTION # 3:

New Trainer Protocols - CLIENT RETENTION TACTICS

To make a client believe they could never train on their own and to keep them as long as possible - you must ALWAYS:

1 - Spot them no matter what the exercise is - even if they don’t need a spotter. Try to maintain some gentle physical contact to create the sense of value your are providing - so they’d feel unsure if they were to try to do the workout on their own. In other words ‘PROVE’ your worth.

2 - Make it a point to correct their form at least 3 or 4 times during every training session - even if their form is already perfect - try to ‘fine tune’ it.

3 - Count every single repetition for them - do not let them count for them self - EVER. The more they can do for them self - the less they need you as a trainer.

4 - DO NOT teach them any exercises that don’t require the equipment in this facility. This especially means - NO BODYWEIGHT type exercises or floor-work - even if you think it will speed up their progress. Remember - in our plan - SLOWER results is better for business and your paycheck.

5 - Change something every few workouts - You don’t want to confuse them - but you want to have them think there is some scientific reason behind the modifications - that only the trainer understands. Remember, once a client thinks they can be their own trainer - they are out of here - and so is their money.

There’s a lot more than this, too much to list here… - and at first I was pretty fired up, thinking to myself - these are the kinds of crooks that give the industry a bad image and make it harder for us good guys to succeed…

But I soon realized that if these scammers are going to operate this way - that I would ultimately benefit in the long run if I ran my fitness training business according to my standards and principles… Putting my clients’ results first and foremost.

The next day - I dropped off the manual to Stu at around lunchtime - and told him “I’m gonna pass on your offer Stu - my philosophy is very different than what you guys are doing here. See you around town.” …and as I turned to walk out, Stu says…

“But Joey you’ll make a ton of money with us.”

And as I’m walking out the door - I turn my head to look at Stu and tell him “I’m not doing this to make a ton of money, Stu - I’m doing it deliver big-time results for my clients…” - and I leave…

As I’m walking away I’m thinking to myself… “these bastards are taking advantage of unsuspecting women all in the name of making more money - this way of business will come back to bite these crooks in the ass eventually.”

That day I immediately begin focusing all my time and energy on my developing my womens’ training business - and things are cruising along…
