Alright, get ready – because here comes the “See, I told youuuuuu…”

A while back I did a blog post on all the “toning shoes and sneakers” flooding the market – with promises of toning your legs, butt and thighs… Claims to lift & firm your butt and round your buttocks… Simply by wearing these (UGLY) curved-bottom clunkers and walking around town in them…

Ummm… yeah, right… LOL…

So – you want the latest legal smack-down on this total sillyness?

Well; here it is:

FTC curbs “toning shoes” claims.

The Federal Trade Commission has announced that Skechers USA, Inc. has agreed to pay $40 million to settle charges that the company deceived consumers by making unfounded claims that its Shape-ups athletic shoes help people lose weight, and strengthen and tone their buttocks, legs and abdominal muscles. The settlement with the FTC is part of a broader agreement, also being announced today resolving a multi-state investigation, which was led by the Tennessee and Ohio Attorneys General Offices and included attorneys general from 42 other states and the District of Columbia. The Yoga Truth: Does Anyone Benefit from Yoga?


Yoga is big business. VERY big – huge actually. In addition to the practice itself there are clothing lines, franchises, nutritional supplements, resorts – and more – all built on the foundation of ‘yoga’…

But there is an inherent problem that comes with this phenomenon

Just like in the fitness instructor/personal training field – there are dozens of “certification courses” creating new and inexperienced yoga instructors every single month, all around the world. Now – this isn’t a problem if the instructor is well-matched with appropriate students and is skilled in their method of teaching.

But – quite often that is not the case. Don’t get me wrong though – as there are many top-notch yoga instructors in literally every city and town around the globe. The challenge is finding the right “match” – just like when seeking out a personal trainer of fitness coach.

At this point I realize you may be thinking:

“What does Joey know about Yoga?”

…and here’s your answer:

If you’ve been using my any of my home, office and travel fitness programs – you may have noticed some exercises or stretches resemble a yoga pose, move or position… And this would be correct as most of my programs are a ‘fusion’ of exercises and a blend of workout methods…

But – by no means am I calling myself a yoga instructor. Not in the slightest…

Having been in the fitness industry for well over 22 years, I’ve had the privilege of meeting some of the best people in various areas of fitness – two of them are listed above. I have another longtime yoga friend who is on more of a global stage though…

More on him later as I want to answer the original question of today’s post…

“Are there really any benefits of yoga?”

The answer is “Absolutely.” (stress reduction, toning, flexibility, health enhancement, sexual performance improvement, etc…) …BUT – since there are so many forms of yoga – and so many instructors out there – It’s up to you to define your personal needs and then seek out the proper style/instructor which best matches your current abilities and specific goals.

4 Lower-Body Exercises; Body-weight Leg, Butt & Thigh Workout for Women

Synergistic body-weight exercises for women can help the average female achieve specific lower body goals. Primary examples are:

ONE: Anti Cellulite Exercises for targeting the cause of dimples & shadows
TWO: Toning Exercises for toning, strengthening and lifting saggy or droopy muscles
THREE: Sculpting Exercises for shaping specific lower body areas and trouble zones
FOUR: Firming Exercises for tightening up soft/atrophied muscles and smoothing bumpy skin

In this leg, butt and thigh exercise video clip, I bring you through a combination sequence of four body-weight exercises which stimulate the legs, glutes and thigh zones. These will also get the middle and lower back working as well to help tighten, tone and reduce flab.

This mini-workout can be done as a solo exercise routine – or you can combine it with the other free exercises on this website – or in my complete, home and travel workout programs for purchase (e-manuals,dvds, etc…)

This lower-body exercise combo-sequence includes four body-weight movements. They are:

ONE – Exercise Ball Double-Leg, Hamstring Curl (for back of thighs & butt)

Lying down on a mat or soft surface, facing up – place your heels and calves on top of an exercise ball (55cm or 65cm is ideal). Arms on the ground at your sides. Lift your hips off the ground by pushing your heels and calves into the ball. That is your starting position. Then curl your heels in toward your hamstrings, while pushing your hips toward the sky. Stop when the bottom of your feet are on top of the ball. Then slowly return the the starting position.

TWO – Double-Leg, Knee-Up & Down (for quads, fronts of thighs)

Get onto your hands and knees – on an exercise mat or soft surface. Bring your toes forward. Then slowly lift your knees off the ground and get your glutes up toward the sky – so your legs are almost fully straightened. Then slowly return to the start position – lightly touching your knees to the ground.

THREE – Symmetrical Hip-Extensions (glutes, low and mid back)

Lying down face-up now. Bend your knees and point your toes upward – so your heels are the only part of your feet touching the floor or mat. Push your heels into the ground and lift your hips toward the sky. Give a slight pause at the top. Then slowly lower your hips to touch the mat. Breath out on the way up (as you exert) and breath in on the way down (as you relax).

FOUR – Exercise Ball Squats (for the whole lower body)

Place an exercise ball (size 55cm – 65cm) against a wall and then lean against it with your lower back area. With your feet shoulder width apart – slowly squat down as the ball rolls up toward your upper back/shoulder blade area. Pause for a second or two – then slowly return to the top position, keeping a slight bend in the knees at the top. Breath in going down – breath out going up.

If going through this body-weight exercise circuit is too easy – try it a second and third time. You can also add 5 or 10 repetitions to each set for a longer exercise sessions and a more intense fitness challenge.

One of the biggest ‘misconceptions’ people have about personal trainers sounds something like this…

“If I had the money to hire a personal trainer I would be in perfect shape.”

Having been in this industry for over 20 years – I’ve come to learn that this is actually just a cop-out excuse for most people. Plain and simple…

But, today – I want to show you the hidden danger in this excuse disguised as a ‘misconception’.

Let’s assume you have the money to hire a personal trainer to get you – and keep you in shape. It is extremely important that you are aware of the fact that all trainers are not safe trainers.

Hi Joey,

I had been doing your Ultimate Lower Body workouts and (in addition) went to the gym with a PT (personal trainer) a couple of times a week.

I was in good shape and ‘well’. However, I injured my neck during a weight training session with my PT and had to rest a while to recover.

On starting back training, I was passed as ‘fit’ by my PT to lift weights again.

It was a disaster.

I have had chronic pain in my neck and shoulders and now I’m having physio (therapy) to improve things (rehabilitate).

Long story made short, I have not been training for 4 months now. All my gains in fitness and general shape are lost. I just walk every other day for an hour.

Do you think I could start back with the Lower Body workouts and be safe now? I don’t want to do upper body work as I am so frightened of further damage.

Pam answered her email directly – so I’m not going to rehash the answer here – but here are a few valuable lessons I want you to take from this:

1 – A certified personal trainer is not necessarily a ‘safe’ trainer. Frankly, some trainers are downright psychotic – I can say this because I’ve seen them with my own eyes in all types of settings. **NOTE: There are also many EXCELLENT trainers all over the world.**

2 – If a trainer injures you – Don’t ask them if you are well enough to resume exercising (see the proper medical pro.)

3 – If a trainer injures you – don’t go back to the same trainer – if you “must have a trainer…”

4 – Traditional weight training is not for everyone – as a matter of fact most people can work amazing wonders on their body with a program that only consists of about 15% weight training – most of the rest is bodyweight and band training.

5 – Learn to be your own personal trainer. Anything you think a trainer can do for you – you can do better yourself, as long as you have the right information.

Let me start by saying that I’ve never had a weight problem, per se and I’ve always been in pretty decent shape. But, when my husband, a doctor, packed on 30 extra pounds we started hitting the gym. (He’s of eastern Indian ethnicity and that group is really prone to Type II diabetes.)

I then got into fabulous shape but I always had those big “cheerleader” thighs. No matter what I did, I couldn’t get them toned without them appearing big. To top it off, I started noticing a little cottage cheese dimples on my ass and thighs (cellulite!).

I’m smart/experienced enough to know that I needed to find a different method and went web searching.

Your ULBHTM program caught my eye and I mulled it over for a day or two. I didn’t want to be impulsive and buy the first thing I saw because I thought that I’d likely end up with crap. But, I went back to your site a few days later and read more of your blog entries. I like your no-nonsense style and I liked that you peppered your statements with a curse word here and there. It told me that while you may take your work seriously, you don’t take yourself too seriously.

I thought, “Wow, here’s a guy that I wouldn’t mind training with in person.” and so I bought your program.

I had a trip planned (big party with friends in Amsterdam) so I didn’t get started right away, but when I did, WHOA! Those simple moves kicked my ass the first time and they still do today! I don’t think I’ll even bother schlepping to the gym anymore this winter. I’m so excited watching my legs slim down while I maintain the lean muscle tone. I’m so excited watching my ass firm up to that tight, 20-year-old appearance.

My AGs and 7s never looked so good on me!

Anyway, I wanted to say thanks. I never knew I didn’t have to do squats and deadlifts at the gym to get great results.

I can’t wait to see how I finish!

Stunning New Discovery About the Female Butt

While going through a bunch of old fitness assessment documents I uncovered an amazing fact that I had to publish today…

Here’s the story…

Just this past week – I was able to finally fulfill a long-time dream of mine…. Which is the dream of working from home – but even more significant is the fact that I can now actually work in any location – I’m no longer tied to an office or a training studio…

The WORLD is now ‘my office’ – (as long as I have a laptop and ‘net access ;-))

So, as I was clearing out my office and sorting what to keep and what to get rid of – I had a chance to start going through about 380 fitness assessments from clients I’ve trained during the last 16 years or so… most of them women…

While doing this I uncovered something so insightful – so powerful – that I had to share it…

In my questionnaire for new clients – there was a section they’d fill out that asked “What are your top 3 Goals You Want to Reach?”

I started noticing how many women were listing some kind of improvement with their butt… It was something I never quite picked up during my full-time training days – I guess I was ‘too close to see it’…

Anyway – the truly surprising discovery was that these women who listed their butt as the # 1 priority for improvement – had the highest percentage of overall success in regards to achieving their goals – most of which had to do with getting their bodies into some kind of respectable shape – WITH emphasis on the BUTTOCKS region…

The more I went through these fitness profiles the more this relationship was becoming evident…

Women who wanted to fix their butt, more than any other region of their body were the most successful at fixing their butt problem issues AND getting the rest of their bodies in great shape as well… And the number was significant… Definitely not a fluke…

And so I had to try to figure out why of course…

And the only thing I could think of is the butt means so much to a woman in terms of her self esteem, the types of clothing she wears, her options when shopping for various articles of clothing, the attention she gets from her man or men in general, and how she feels about herself when she looks in the mirror at her backside, etc, etc… – that she is willing to put enough time, energy and effort into getting the desired results that the rest of her body getting in shape is a mere side effect of her drive and determination to literally “save her ass”…

It may have been that the focus was so concentrated and intentionally directed that being overwhelmed by all the other elements that usually distract so many women – simply were a non-factor – and the typical challenges and obstacles were non-existent – in other words they didn’t stand a chance against the ‘committed spirit’…

This finding was very energizing to me… As you might remember I mentioned in recent article that I’m working on a website/program that will be primarily focused on the female butt and fixing the various types of problem butts that women suffer from…. Finding this kind of amazing reinforcement of the concept is very promising as we are now factoring this into the final edition of this program, before we make it publicly available…

The way it’s designed basically guarantees your success – and that you will improve your butt and keep the improvements FOREVER…

You might be a bit anxious and excited about this thing – and I can understand as we are pretty excited too – there is NOTHING else like it…

… But what most women don’t know is how fast the sexual enhancement effects of a few simple exercises can be realized and experienced…

I recently bought your Leg, Butt, Hip and Thigh Makeover e-Manual and as soon as I came home yesterday I started “the Makeover”. After moving the living room table aside, I put my fitness mat on the floor and started the exercises – excellent instructions, I must say…

Many of these exercises are unknown to me but I quickly got the hang of them… your instructions make it quite simple. The exercises are fun, brilliant and deliver a stimulus to strategic muscle areas – a VERY targeted routine, I have to admit.

He made me laugh… I asked him if he thought I was doing the exercises the right way…

He really likes your program and made a few comments about the exercises… All of this created a romantic mood in him (and me). He went into the bathroom and posted a note that said “True love lasts forever…”. My heart melted and needless to say we had some “intimate” time together – it was wonderful ;-))

This program will enhance many marriages and improve relationships, Joey – excellent job – I LOVE it, and what it’s doing for my body, mind and spirit… ;-))
